Spring 2014 Boston Collegiate Trading Competition

Suffolk University Sawyer Business School, Boston University Trading Club, Harvard Veritas Financial Group, and TD Ameritrade invite you to our Spring 2014 Trading Competition. The competition consists of 2 rounds and will bring together some of the best undergraduate and graduate student traders from the top schools in the nation.

Round 1 is a real time trading simulation sponsored by TD Ameritrade. Competitors in round 1 trade live in the markets using the thinkorswim platform for 2 weeks and try to generate as much profit as possible. The beginning and end of round 1 features keynote speakers, panelists, and tutorials by industry leaders from TD Ameritrade. The top traders from each school after round 1 will be invited to round 2.

Round 2 is a day-long event on April 26th and features keynote by Former Blackrock Chief Equity Strategist Robert Doll, 5 case competitions, and networking with individuals from several top financial institutions.

The event offers real world experience with real world/real time market activity. The event will showcase the top student traders from around the country and aims to allow America�s premier financial firms the opportunity to gain access to this talent.

    • Market Drive and Competition Launch:
      • Learn the tools of the trade and get hands on knowledge from JJ Kinahan, TD Ameritrade�s Managing Director and Chief Derivatives Strategist and Mary Ryan, TDA University. Discover the technologies of Think or Swim, practical investor wisdom, and hear about how innovation and a changing market are providing new opportunities.
      • Learn about the Think or Swim trading platform and the tools available to make you a smarter investor, the markets as a whole, and various trading strategies.
    • 2 weeks of live trading using TD Ameritrade Thinkorswim accounts
    • Trade Share Summit and Competition Awards Summit:
      • A day of workshop on futures, options, stocks, etc. will provide traders an opportunity to share their experience during the completion and learn from the Think or Swim industry professionals in a workshop environment.
      • Presentation about career opportunities will follow the workshops.
      • Keynote and strategy presentations will culminate in an evening of awards and networking.
  • Round 2 / Final Round: April 26
    • Top traders from round 1 are invited to trade in round 2
    • Keynote Speaker: Robert Doll, Former Chief Equity Strategist at Blackrock
    • Final round of 5 trading case competitions using Rotman Institute of Technology trading platform
    • Networking and reception with representatives from top financial institutions

Finalists of both rounds will receive prizes, with the top participant of the final round receiving a new iPad Air.

Rules:
Competition Requirements:
Teams will be evaluated based on the net value of their portfolio at the close of April 25, 2014.

Round 1:
All teams invest $1 million at the start of the competition, trading each day until the end of the competition, and closing all positions before the market close on the last day of the competition. Winners will be determined by their final cash position and by their strategies.

  • Trading Platform: Think or Swim Trading account provided by TD Ameritrade
  • Starting Cash Position: $1 million
  • Securities: stocks, options and futures only, excluding F/X trading, penny stocks, and OTCBB/Pink Sheets.
  • Trading Hours: Pre Market - Market - After Hours trading
  • Portfolio Concentration: No single security or cash should represent more than 20% of a team�s portfolio.
  • Performance: Each team must close all their positions from 3pm to 4pm on Friday April 25, 2014. Teams will be evaluated on their final cash position.
    • Awards for strategic performance will also be given.

Round 2:

  • Students invited to participate in round 2 will be given case competitions and Rotman trading software in advance to study.
  • Attire is business formal during.
  • Cheating will not be tolerated and if you are found to have cheated in the competition, we will inform our financial institution attendees of the violation, which will significantly impact your ability to attain a job.

Updates, Monitoring, Penalties:
All Trader Activity will be updated on TDA University portal

  • To monitor trader�s performance
  • This will also allow us to monitor adherence to the rules. You will receive a warning the first time on your first infraction. Each infraction after will come with a $10,000 penalty, plus any gains from those trades will be removed from the account. Any losses incurred from a trading infraction will remain with the account in addition to the $10,000 penalty. More than two infractions results in removal from the competition.

Strategy Presentation:
The top participants in Round 1 will be asked to share their trading strategies at the investor panel on April 25th. While this is optional, it would be great to hear from the top traders to gain insight on some of their best trades and overall trading strategy.

Contest Judging:
Consent to Publication of Ranking and Results:
Entry to the contest constitutes permission by the Sawyer Business School, Boston University, Veritas Financial Group and TD Ameritrade to post the university�s and trader�s information, including, without limitation, name, performance and relative ranking, and images on their respective websites and to use all information for purposes of advertising and promotion without compensation to the universities or contestants.

Prohibited Use of Contest for Promotional Purposes:
Contestants shall not, either alone or in concert with others, use their participation in the contest for promotional purposes unless approved in advance in writing by Suffolk University, Boston University, Veritas Financial Group and TD Ameritrade. If a contestant violates this provision, the contestant may be disqualified from future competitions. If determined to be in violation, the contestant agrees to pay all legal fees and damage incurred including those to enforce this provision.

Postponement, Cancellation, Acceptance and Removal:
The 2014 Intercollegiate Trading Competition reserves the right to modify the contest terms, to postpone the contest commencement date or to cancel the contest if, in its sole discretion, it determines that such action is reasonable and necessary. 2014 Intercollegiate Trading Competition may reject any contestant�s application for any reason. Furthermore, the Intercollegiate Trading Competition has the right to remove or bar any contestant from the contest for any reason in its sole discretion, including, without limitation, barring any contestant who would or might: bring disrepute to the contest; or who has violated any rule, law or regulation pertaining to equities or futures trading; or has attempted to benefit from any collusive or other trading irregularity. Intercollegiate Trading Competition will review and monitor all participants throughout the contest in the interest and fairness of all participants. Minimum participation required; we reserve the right to cancel the contest if minimum participation is not reached. In the event that the contest is cancelled, no prizes will be awarded. While highly unlikely, we reserve the right to cancel the contest at any time and will make honest efforts to notify all contestants.
